SERC Chile participated in the event by conducting an engaging workshop where the attending children learned how to build a solar collector mirror.

With a large turnout from schools and institutes, the Fiesta Explora: Chile Natural Laboratory was held at the Museo del Ferrocarril in Antofagasta.

During the activity, SERC Chile and the Universidad de Antofagasta participated with a stand that provided information on solar energy storage technologies and allowed the youngest visitors to manufacture a solar collector mirror using educational materials. Children and young people of all ages enjoyed working with the materials provided at the stand and were able to build the mirror, which demonstrated a practical application of this type of technology.

Ángel Fernández, a postdoctoral researcher in Research Line 4: Solar Energy Storage at SERC Chile, commented on the importance of this activity. “With ingenuity and in an attractive way, these workshops can be conducted to motivate children to learn more about science and see it as something that is always present in their lives,” he explained.

The rector of the Universidad de Antofagasta addressed the importance of this initiative, which allows the university to reach out to the community and disseminate these important topics. “It is a joint effort between the university, academia, the community, and services. Through this alliance, children and everyone else will be able to learn about the importance of solar energy in improving quality of life,” he stated.

Within the SERC Chile stand, presentations on storage applications with different types of molten salts were also held, among other projects.
