Rodrigo Palma, one of the leaders of the Energy Storage Research Line, was interviewed on the Congreso del Futuro segment broadcast by Radio Cooperativa to discuss the future of Green Hydrogen in Chile. In the interview, which you can listen to here (starting at 38:26), Palma explained that this variety of hydrogen (generated by non-polluting sources, hence the name “green”) has great potential due to the significant reduction in renewable energy costs.

Does Chile have the potential to join this movement? Palma replied that there are two options. We can follow the global trend, taking advantage of mass adoption and integrating foreign technology, or we can be among the global players. For the latter, there is potential. “Chile has nearly 1,900 GW of renewable energy potential. Of these, only 25 GW are installed,” he indicated.

Furthermore, he emphasized that hydrogen offers flexibility to other somewhat inflexible renewable energy sources, such as solar power, which is why the National Green Hydrogen Strategy—led by the Ministry of Energy and involving all key stakeholders in the sector—is of great importance.
