Marcelo Cortés Carmona, a researcher in our center's Energy Storage research line, has been elected dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Antofagasta for the 2021-2024 period. Professor Cortés has developed his research activity at SERC Chile and especially at the Energy Development Center of Antofagasta of the University of Antofagasta (CDEA-UA), where he is in charge of the research line focused on the planning and operation of power systems regarding the incorporation of large-scale solar technologies.
His leadership at the head of the Faculty where he completed his undergraduate studies will focus on consolidating the growth of recent years to contribute significantly to the development of the Region. His strategy will aim to leverage available innovation spaces, particularly in undergraduate and postgraduate programs, new teaching methodologies, infrastructure development, the creation of international linkage programs, and the generation of new collaboration agreements with the industrial sector.
Marcelo Cortés is the author of 28 articles in international indexed journals (WoS and Scopus categories), has more than 26 presentations at national and international conferences, and has participated in various research projects with budgets close to 860 thousand dollars. His previous role in university management was as executive director of the "Engineering 2030 – Consortium of Engineering Faculties of the Antofagasta Region" project, representing his university.
