In August 2017, Corfo approved the funds for the implementation of the AtaMoS-TeC project (Atacama Module and System Technology Center), which will develop technologies for the solar photovoltaic industry in Chile as a strategic commitment to the country's sustainable growth.
AtaMoS-Tec is a proposal from SERC Chile, which will be executed by the Universidad de Antofagasta as the beneficiary. Three renowned foreign institutions participate as co-executors: CEA INES (France), ISC Konstanz (Germany), and Fraunhofer Chile. A group of companies acts as associates, providing funding and highly relevant collaborative work. These include Adrox Spa, Borg, Cintac, Colbún, Ecoenergías, Ecovisión, Fotcast, Geogrow Spa, Innova Renovable, Mondragón, New Energy, Novalquimia, Phibrand S.A., Snare, Solarpro, Solcor, Syntec, Tecno Andina, Venergía, and Vidrios Lirquén S.A.
The formal launch of AtaMos-Tec took place on January 19, 2018, in Antofagasta. This project will be led by a transitional board of directors, which will serve until the consortium that will lead during the next years of development is formed. It will be composed of a representative from SERC Chile (its director, Rodrigo Palma), one from the Universidad de Antofagasta (Edward Fuentealba), and one from CEA INES (Delfina Muñoz). The industry unanimously agreed that its representatives on the board will be José Antonio Aguirre from Sintac, Carlos Jofré from Laboratorio Solar, and Juan Eduardo Vásquez from Colbún. The board chairman is Edward Fuentealba, and Bárbara Silva is its executive director.
Professionals and researchers from all these institutions worked for over a year on this proposal, which was submitted to receive funding from the Strategic Investment Fund (FIE) within the framework of the Solar Strategic Program Roadmap, created in 2015 to promote the creation of a local solar industry intended to improve the country's productivity. The competitive awarding of funds for this initiative is emblematic, becoming the most significant R&D project in solar matters to emerge in Chile. This is due to the significant amounts it will manage—with key public and private contributions—and its intended contribution to new scientific and technological knowledge in the solar field.
