The Fondef Technological Research project, led by SERC Chile director Claudia Rahmann, held its first activity on Wednesday, November 18, with the International Seminar “Online analysis of the dynamic security of the National Electric System using artificial intelligence techniques: opportunities and challenges,” which is available at this link.
The project's main objective is to develop a computational tool for online monitoring of the dynamic security of Chile's National Electric System (SEN) using Artificial Intelligence techniques, and to implement it at the Coordinator's facilities. It was awarded to the University of Chile Energy Center, together with the National Electric Coordinator and the National Energy Commission, and will have a two-year development period.
In her presentation—which can be reviewed here—Professor Rahmann addressed the difficulties justifying the use of this tool: the inclusion of renewable energies, the dynamic response in system control, and post-contingency recovery, as well as the challenges for systems with low short-circuit levels and low inertia, which can be weak and prone to instabilities.
Also presenting at the seminar were Alberto Trigueros, from the EMS Modeling and Applications Department of the National Electric Coordinator, and international guest Professor Vijay Vittal from Arizona State University. Professor Vittal presented “Recent advances in the use of artificial intelligence techniques for online dynamic security assessment. Challenges and opportunities in Chile,” which can be read here.
The event also featured the participation of Deninson Fuentes, head of the Electrical Department of the National Energy Commission (CNE); Silvia Núñez, Director of Research at the University of Chile; Claudio Espinoza, Board Member of the National Electric Coordinator; and Khaled Awad, director of Fondef projects at the National Research and Development Agency (ANID).
