The program Cazadores de Ciencia traveled to the Norte Grande to learn about the potential of solar energy in power generation and water decontamination techniques.

The search for privileged areas in our country due to their status as natural laboratories led the team of the TVN program Cazadores de Ciencia, Chile: Laboratorio Natural, to travel to the Norte Grande, where they discovered the work carried out by the Universidad de Tarapacá using solar potential for water treatment.

Accompanied by the principal investigator of Research Line 5: Solar Water Treatment, Lorena Cornejo, Cazadores de Ciencia was able to learn about one of the center's projects. This involves the work of the mobile water decontamination unit in the Camarones district, which aims to eliminate high concentrations of arsenic, boron, and pathogenic organisms that are harmful to health.

This is the only mobile water treatment unit utilizing the power of the sun, placing this technology at the service of the well-being of this rural community, as well as other districts affected by the same problem throughout Chile.

During the program, SERC Chile’s interest in developing solar energy to integrate it into activities and thus improve people’s lives was explained, along with the Atacama Desert’s unique global potential, which could even export solar energy to the rest of the region.
