AtaMoS-TeC (Atacama Module and System Technology Center) is a project that will develop technologies for the solar photovoltaic energy industry in Chile, a strategic bet for the country's sustainable growth, which has recently received support from Corfo. It is a proposal from SERC Chile in which the six universities that make up the center will actively participate, with the exception of Fundación Chile.
Three renowned foreign institutions will act as co-executors: CEA INES (France), ISC Konstanz (Germany), and Fraunhofer Chile. A group of companies that placed their trust in the proposal and will contribute significant funding and collaborative work are participating as associates. These include Adrox Spa, Borg, Cintac, Colbún, Ecoenergías, Ecovisión, Fotcast, Geogrow Spa, Innova Renovable, Mondragón, New Energy, Novalquimia, Phibrand S.A., Snare, Solarpro, Solcor, Syntec, Tecno Andina, Venergía, and Vidrios Lirquén S.A.
Professionals and researchers from all these institutions worked for over a year on the AtaMoS-TeC project, which was submitted to receive funding from the Strategic Investment Fund (FIE) within the framework of the Solar Strategic Program Roadmap, created in 2015 to promote the development of a local solar industry intended to enhance the country's productivity.
The competitive award of funds for this initiative is emblematic, making it the most significant R&D project in solar matters to emerge in Chile. This is due to the substantial amounts it will manage—with key public and private contributions—and its intended contribution to new scientific and technological knowledge in the solar field.
AtaMoS-TeC will finance the creation of a non-profit consortium or corporation tasked with developing photovoltaic technologies adapted to the exceptional conditions of the Atacama Desert, which SERC Chile has been studying since its inception in 2012: high radiation, high average sunshine hours, an arid climate, nearly cloudless skies, and low ambient temperatures, among others. As a result of this technological development, it will be possible to reduce the cost of energy to a target of US$25/MWh by 2025, and additionally generate a domestic industry capable of providing goods and services to the Chilean industry and for export.
A central part of the AtaMoS-TeC development will take place in Antofagasta, at the Atacama Desert Solar Platform and/or the University of Antofagasta. While this consortium or corporation is being established, the latter will serve as the beneficiary entity.
SERC Chile is confident in its ability to inspire other stakeholders from the public and private sectors, as well as the community, to join this initiative.
